Nestled along the Chesapeake Bay, Baltimore is the epitome of a seaport. Baltimore’s Inner Harbor is one of the city’s major landmarks. It’s home to several historic ships, including the USS Constellation, the only Civil War-era ship that’s still afloat, and the USCGC Taney, which survived the attack on Pearl Harbor. There are also several museums on the Inner Harbor, such as the American Visionary Art Museum, the Baltimore Museum of Industry, and Port Discovery Children’s Museum. Kids of all ages will also enjoy the National Aquarium, which features over 20,000 animals from land and sea. While exploring, you can make sure your visit is truly unforgettable with a private dolphin tour where you can get up close and personal with the aquarium’s colony of Atlantic bottle-nosed dolphins.
History buffs can grab a water taxi to Fort McHenry, the site of the Chesapeake Campaign—the most pivotal event of the War of 1812. It’s also the place that inspired Francis Scott Key to write “The Star-Spangled Banner” in the wake of witnessing the British retreat after failing to penetrate the fort after a 25-hour long bombardment.
A short car trip from Baltimore will bring you to our nation’s capital, Washington D.C. In about an hour, you can immerse yourself in the heart of our government at the Capital Building, the White House, and U.S. Supreme Court. Lose yourself at the National Archives or in one of the Smithsonian museums. Or take a stroll along the National Mall and Washington Monument and explore the Lincoln, World War II, Vietnam, and Korean War memorials.
Whether you spend the day enjoying Baltimore or are returning from a day trip to Washington, D.C., you’ll find plenty to do at night. There are few better ways to end your day than with a sunset cruise around the harbor. Known for its seafood, crab is the local specialty in Baltimore—crab cakes, crab bisque, and, of course, steamed and seasoned Maryland blue crab. If cracking crustaceans isn’t up your alley, there are plenty of other continental and international options. And music fans will find plenty to get their feet tapping, with everything from rock shows to Broadway musicals on offer around the city.
Between Baltimore and Washington there’s plenty to pique and then satisfy your curiosity.
