Located on California’s Pacific coastline, San Diego offers its residents and visitors the best of both worlds: city and beach. Start your visit at one of San Diego’s most photographed landmarks, Scripps Pier. Beyond being a visual point of interest, the Pier is a great starting point for exploring La Jolla Shores Beach and checking out some tide pools. Another popular destination is Balboa Park, which is home to 16 museums in addition to gardens, hiking trails, and a zoo. This San Diego icon is the United States’ biggest urban cultural park and offers visitors plenty of engaging ways to spend a day, both indoors and out.
While San Diego’s beach scene definitely lives up to the hype, the city and surrounding area are also full of other kinds of natural landscapes to explore. Take a day trip to Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve, an oceanfront reserve dedicated to conserving the Torrey Pine tree, which is located about 30 minutes by car outside San Diego’s city center. The reserve’s many nature trails weave through sandstone canyons, pine forests, and the Torrey Pines State Beach. Another scenic natural area, the 68-acre Sunset Cliffs Natural Park is great for those who prefer a stroll to a hike. To catch stunning views of the sunset, time your visit to Sunset Cliffs to culminate in the early evening. Even if your visit doesn’t coincide with the sunset, you can still admire the nature reserve’s rock formations, sea caves, and picturesque bluffs.
Sometimes the best way to experience a city is on foot. Wander around some of San Diego’s iconic neighborhoods to get a feel for what this SoCal city is all about. Little Italy is a great place to start—and also a great place to grab a bite to eat. Try out one of the neighborhood’s authentic Italian bakeries or sample fresh produce at the farmers market. For art lovers, Barrio Logan is a great spot. Walk through Chicano Park and admire the numerous murals painted on the Coronado Bridge. This cultural district is also one of the best places to find Mexican food in the city, an honor that’s hard-won in a city known for its fish tacos and California burritos, alongside more traditional fare.
