Whether you’re visiting for business or pleasure, you’re in for a destination that’s sure to win your heart. The biggest of the Hawaiian Islands, the Big Island is 4,028 square miles in area but is home to only 13 percent of Hawaii’s total population. This means that the Island of Hawaii’s undisturbed natural areas are some of the best that the state has to offer. Experience this natural beauty for yourself, starting with Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Visitors can explore a number of scenic hiking trails that include the Nahuku, or Thurston Lava Tube, the Crater Rim trail, and Devastation Trail. This national park includes two active volcanoes, Mauna Loa and Kilauea,.
Not to be missed on the Island of Hawaii, of course, are the beaches. The island boasts sands of many colors, including green, black, and traditional white. Near Kona, wildlife enthusiasts can try to spot a Hawaiian green sea turtle at Kahaluu Beach Park, which is also a popular area for snorkeling. Those curious to see black sand can head over to Punaluu Black Sand Beach, the Big Island’s most well-known black sand beach. Located on the island’s southeastern Kau Coast, Punaluu is also a popular spot for sea turtles and has an adjacent campground for visitors who want to spend the night.
From outdoor adventuring to spending a quiet afternoon perusing used bookstores and art galleries in downtown Kona, the Island of Hawaii is a place that will appeal to every kind of traveler. Whether you choose to take surfing lessons and ride the waves in Honolii Beach Park, tour a coffee farm and sample some of Kona’s finest, take a kayak out in the protected waters of Hilo Bay, or simply soak up the sun on one of the palm-tree lined beaches, the Island of Hawaii is a destination you’ll return to again and again.
