With year-round mild temperatures, beautiful bay views, and some of the best food on the West Coast, the San Francisco Bay Area is hard to beat! And with transport options via bus, rapid rail, and commuter rail from the airport to the San Francisco city center, you don’t have to waste a single minute.
The city of San Francisco is made up of vibrant neighborhoods, each with its own distinctive character and sights to offer. Start your city tour in Haight-Ashbury, an area that’s fondly called by some the birthplace of the American counterculture. Spend an afternoon browsing used bookstores, vintage shops, and independent cafes nestled amongst the area’s colorful Victorian-style houses. Next, head to Chinatown for dim sum and browse through the neighborhood’s many fresh produce markets. If you’re wondering how your dessert was made, you can watch fortune cookie-making in action at the Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Factory! Don’t miss a photo op in front of the famous Dragon Gate that marks the official Chinatown entrance on Bush Street.
The San Francisco Bay Area has no shortage of hiking, biking, and outdoor adventure opportunities, both urban and in nature. Hike the stunning coastal Lands End Trail or walk up Telegraph Hill to Coit Tower. Explore Golden Gate Park and relax with a picnic, or walk across the Golden Gate Bridge itself to neighboring Sausalito. Head north to Muir Woods and see old-growth redwoods more than 1,200 years old and over 250 feet tall. Take a ferry ride out to Alcatraz Island and tour the former federal prison that was shut down in the 1970s. End your Bay Area getaway with a trip up to Twin Peaks for a view that you’ll remember for years to come!
