Chicago is known as a city of neighborhoods. In fact, the city is made up of 77 distinct and official community areas. But chances are when you think of Chicago, you think of the Loop—which is what natives call the downtown area, so named for the loop of elevated train tracks surrounding several city blocks. Amongst the Loop are the world-famous John Hancock Center and Willis Tower (or Sears Tower, depending on who you ask), along with several other iconic members of the lakeshore skyline. Architecture lovers can sign up for a walking tour, a river boat tour, or a lake-bound tour.
It’s easy to get to the Loop from Midway—just a quick 30-minute Orange Line trip. From there, you can reach any part of the city you please with the buses and trains of the CTA. Rideshares and rental cars are fine options, too! Plus you can sightsee and people-watch!
There’s so much to do in Chicago, you may not know where to start. Animal lovers can enjoy two zoos—Lincoln Park Zoo in the city itself, Brookfield Zoo in the western suburbs—and the Shedd Aquarium. After the Shedd, stick around the museum campus and check out the Field Museum and the Adler Planetarium. You can also head south to Hyde Park to visit the Museum of Science and Industry. There’s always a show to be seen, whether at a Downtown Theatre District destination, the Steppenwolf, or the Piven Theatre in nearby Evanston. Love to laugh? You’re in the birthplace of improv—check out Second City or iO Theater. No matter how you decide to spend your time, you’ll find something to engage every interest in the Windy City.
