Whether the idea of Los Angeles conjures images of Hollywood and movie stars, the La Brea Tar Pits, palm trees, or traffic jams, it’s safe to say that there’s more to this famous locale than meets the eye. When you deplane at Los Angeles International Airport (which you’re sure to recognize right away from TV and movie representation), you’ll be just 18 miles southwest of downtown L.A.; call a car, hop on a bus, or take a shuttle to the Metro Rail Green Line. Yes, Los Angeles has a subway system.
Many visitors to Los Angeles look forward to seeing Hollywood, L.A.’s super-famous neighborhood. You’re sure to feel star struck immediately upon seeing the famous Hollywood Sign. Originally created in 1923 as an advertisement for a real estate development, the sign overlooks the vaunted neighborhood from its perch on Mount Lee of the Santa Monica Mountains. Take a hike up there and see the city spread before you. Make a day of landmark sightseeing by adding in the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Grauman’s Chinese Theater, and the Capitol Records building.
There are plenty of options for hop-on-hop-off tours of landmarks and “celebrity homes” (sometimes these claims are dubious at best), if that’s your thing, but if it’s not, there is no end to what you can find to occupy your time in the City of Angels. Take in a ball game, do some high-end shopping on Rodeo Drive, venture into the Valley to explore some dives, check out the Sunset Strip—if you dream it, you can do it.
