Visit Hartford/Springfield.
When you deplane at Bradley International Airport, you’re exactly in between Hartford, Connecticut, and Springfield, Massachusetts, in the greater Hartford-Springfield region. Whether you rent a car to head to Springfield or hop on the express bus to downtown Hartford, your adventure awaits.
If you choose to spend your visit primarily in Springfield—the City of Firsts—explore the Springfield Science Museum, home to the first planetarium in the United States. You can also explore the museum’s aquarium and check out its life-size Tyrannosaurus Rex. If you’re more interested in arts and culture, explore the rest of the Quadrangle—what locals call the Metro Center neighborhood’s cluster of museums. Beyond the Springfield Science Museum, you’ll find two art museums, a history museum, and two spots celebrating Theodor Geisel—or as you likely know him, Dr. Seuss. The Dr. Seuss National Memorial Sculpture Garden and the Amazing World of Dr. Seuss Museum are both enriching options that are fun for the whole family. If nightlife is what you’re after, head to the Club Quarter, home to dozens of bars, clubs, music venues, and other after-hours spots.
If your trip takes you to Hartford instead, you’ll find plenty to do in New England’s Rising Star. If the children’s literature-related attractions of Springfield don’t grab you, perhaps you’d be more interested in visiting the former home of Samuel Langhorne Clemens—the one and only Mark Twain. The Mark Twain House and Museum gives visitors an opportunity to see where Twain wrote many of his most famous and beloved works. If your appetite isn’t quite so literary, consider exploring the unique local foodie culture. The first American cookbook was published in Hartford, and while local cuisine has matured alongside this historic burg, it’s still rooted in flavors favored by early settlers. Seasonal farmers’ markets are very popular in the area, so no matter when you time your visit, you’ll be able to sample fresh, local produce.
