Visit Indianapolis.
Spending time in Indianapolis is a joy. Typical of most spread-out Midwestern cities, Indy is comprised of cozy neighborhoods, several of which overlook the scenic White River. While Indiana is too often considered a drive-through (or fly-over) state, its capital city is fast becoming a worthwhile vacation destination with enough attractions to fill up a long weekend or week-long stay.
One of Indianapolis’s most unique attractions is the Cultural Trail, an urban bike and pedestrian path that connects the downtown area to several neighborhoods, cultural districts, and entertainment amenities. Hop off the trail to visit the popular Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, the world’s largest children’s museum. A great place to take the family, the museum is full of interesting, innovative, and interactive displays about science, archaeology, and transportation.
Art lovers will want to visit the Indianapolis Museum of Art. This impressive institution features more than 54,000 works of art spanning 5,000 years, including Neoimpressionist paintings and Chinese ceramics. It also boasts one of the largest contemporary art parks: The Virginia B. Fairbanks Art and Nature Park. This acclaimed outdoor space features a 35-acre lake and art installations set amidst woodlands and wetlands. You’ll also find the Oldfields-Lilly House and Gardens, a National Historic Landmark that honors industrialist J.K. Lilly Jr. Another nearby landmark worth seeing is the Indiana War Memorial, which has two museums, three parks, and 24 acres filled with monuments, statues, sculptures, and fountains.
An Indy getaway can easily accommodate your love of the outdoors. Walk along the Central Canal, a waterway constructed in the 1840s when the Indiana State government was trying to bring more commerce to the city. Today, the refurbished Canal Walk serves the downtown community as a waterside promenade for walkers, bikers, runners, and sightseers. Spend a day walking the Monon Trail, a 10.5-mile urban greenway that runs between 10th and 96th street, part of the rails-to-trails movement. This popular path connects lively neighborhoods and commercial districts and is popular with locals.
