Southwest Airlines is proud to serve Kahului Airport.

Nestled in the valley between the West Maui Mountains and the East Maui Volcano, Kahului is the entry point for the island of Maui. When you deplane, you’ll find yourself in the commercial center of the island. Although not your traditional vacation destination, the city still bursts with local color and charm—it’ll be hard to know where to start exploring!

Dive into Maui culture, flora, and fauna right away by visiting the Maui Nui Botanical Gardens. Dedicated to the collection and cultivation of both native plants and those that were introduced by Polynesian settlers, the gardens are an ideal place to enjoy the full breadth of Maui’s plant life. Next, visit the Kanaha Pond State Wildlife Sanctuary. While Hawaiian royals once visited this area to fish, it’s now the protected home of over fifty bird species.

It’s hard to miss Haleakala Crater when you’re looking up. If you choose to trek out of town to Haleakala National Park, you’ll find it amongst the volcanic ranges, sub-tropical rain forest, and may spot one of the endangered species found only inside the park. The park is split into two districts—Kipahulu and Summit—that offer distinct experiences to visitors. If you want panoramic views of Maui, head to Summit to summit the crater. Don’t forget to bring layers; the peak can be up to 20 degrees colder than the temperature at sea level. Sunrise and sunset at the summit are breathtaking but require reservations—be sure to book in advance. Once you reach the summit, you’ll understand why this place is beloved.

Hungry for more of Maui? Get a taste of authentic Hawaiian cuisine in Kahului. You’ll eat like a local during your visit. When folks who live on Maui “go into town,” they’re referring to Kahului. Being on the shore, seafood is a must-have meal. Fresh ahi tuna is great alone or in a poke bowl. If you have an opportunity to attend a luau, make sure to sample Kalua roast pork, which is traditionally cooked in a stone-lined underground oven.
